There had been no sign, as they gathered beneath the burning sun, that all the world would change for the Hwimik. It was their way that at night, when the desert cooled, they went forth and scattered to hunt, to trap, and to gather food; and then, when the day came, to return to their oasis, to doze in the shade of trees and bathe in cooling waters. But on one particular day, as the sun sank toward the horizon, there came strange clouds and rumblings of thunder, and mists obscured the horizons, though there was no rain. There was a sense of great unease, of distance. And then, it stopped, and all went silent - not the silence of hearing, but the silence of emotion. Where before there had been the simple minds of fish and of small animals, there was psionic silence, more forbidding even that the uttermost wastes of the desert. The Hwimik called out to each other in the mists, and gathered together. In their desperation, they even exposed their own feelings for all to detect, but none else could feel them. When the mist cleared, the Hwimik looked around them. The oasis was gone. The plants were strange, and the animals stranger. A terrifying lake stretched away into the distance, seeming to cover half the world and with no sight of the other side. Panic began to set in. Where were they? What had happened? How would they survive? The adults could live through lean times, but their children needed to eat. They hunted and gathered, though they knew neither the habits of the animals nor which plants were safe. They had no choice. What would become of them?

The strange, violent, violet clouds receded, allowing the hwimik to be greeted by a dark, moonless sky, suffused with alien stars, above; and below, a world that seemed not to know the strength of its own embrace, pulling on them more forcefully than Avishraa could ever hope. Large, fish-like creatures leapt from and to the waters of the world-lake, while myriad other small animals slept in the grassland opposite, but none of them registered even one iota in the sudden visitors' sixth senses. There appeared to be a few berry bushes, and the odd palm-like tree a few hundred yards apart, but nothing familiar to the castaways. Half an unfamiliar world away, sun rose over the Šēňajišàrātui outpost, and with it the base's rudimentary defenses against the waterworld's infamously anomalous weather receded. In the courtyard, new recruits to the Combined Starfleet of the Safir Alliance ran laps, watching warily for the presence or absence of clouds on the horizon. Ardian Míšaþ Alūri Míša, the commander of Šēňajišàrātui Outpost, took breakfast in the officers’ mess, reading through the overnight watch’s dispatches as her first mate, Captain Velīđe Mateus, put on a pot of arra. She breathes a quiet sigh of relief once she came upon the manifest, which showed no hands lost or gained compared to that of the night before, both in the crew quarters and the holding areas. Míša put the papers down as Mateus set out breakfast for two, the other flag officers being preoccupied with oversight of the quarterly scouting mission. They went over the outpost's schedule for the day, which but for the aforementioned scouting mission was the same as all the others: concerned mainly with scanning for new flotsam without, and within attempting to puzzle out the origins of the portal storms that gave the planet its name and notoriety. Oh, there was also the small matter of the court-martial of the coralmaid impressee Shukran-3, confined to the outpost's brig for misbehavior before the enemy. (edited)

The Hwimik could hold their breath and swim quite well, but not nearly so well as a fully aquatic creature. Though the fish-like creatures looked appetizing, they could not be caught, not without the ability to cast out a psionic lure - and, besides, they found that the water became too deep for their liking not far offshore. They could see well enough in the dark, and managed to take some of the prey that slept through the night - enough, along with some of the berries, to stave off hunger, at least for the night. But it became clear that thirst, too, would have to be dealt with; the waters of the world-lake proved to taste foul and salty, and made sick those who persisted in drinking it. A pond was eventually found - brackish, but far more potable than the big lake - and they wearily set up camp around it. Then the arguments started over who got to stay nearest to the water. Each matriarch wanted her own children to have first access, and it was not a very extensive pond; there was only so much room. Tired, hungry, and thirsty, tempers flared and frayed. Few blows were exchanged, but there was much spreading of wings and displaying of markings. As things began to settle down again - mostly because the heavy pull of the world tired them too much to immediately continue - one unusually observant male emitted a strangled cry. "The stars have moved already!" Most of them were disturbed, but not enough to worry about it. They did begin to worry when, hours later, the sun practically leaped up from behind the horizon. They worried even more when one very powerful flier managed to get himself off the ground and, upon his return, reported that the land they were on was completely surrounded by the world-lake.

In an outside section of the base, another safir glances to the sky, her medium-length hair (albeit on the short side for her kind) billowing in the breeze. Wielded on her shoulders is a brace that holds a portable stun-shot crossbow, and on a small mobile device she keeps track of the local radar, keen to keep tabs on the strange storms that whisk in stragglers. For a brief while, all appears calm in the region, but then a cell pops up on her device, the colors decisively suggesting a mutant storm. Enough to make her concerned, she taps the screen of her device a couple of times and sends a call to the base. "Imar Itreus to Base. Storm cell at 330, about 17.5 e off base. Prepare for incoming occupants." (edited)

A minute or so later, the same information is read over the outpost's loudspeakers in the calm, slightly synthetic masculine voice of its resident AI, causing those in the courtyard to drop what they were doing and run to their stations as the portal storm defenses reassert themselves. That done, the outpost's massive main gate disgorges a search-and-rescue team, equipped similarly to Imar along with body cameras, and led by Captain Velīđe, then closes behind them. Ardian Mišaþ Alūri relocates from the officers' mess to her post, breakfast in hand, to survey as much as possible the result of the portal storm and the efforts to retrieve anyone or -thing that may wash up, aided by the video feeds from the search-and-rescue team's body cameras. She watches as the nauts group up around Imar. «Ensign Imar», Velīđe “says” telepathically, veiling her empathic output. (edited)

The Hwimik camp - if indeed it could be called that - had become the scene of frantic argument. "Surely we've died!" one Hwimat wailed. "We have been taken to the World-After, that's why we can't sense anything!" "The World-After is a place of shadow!" yelled another. "This-" She flung her forelimb out and flailed it angrily at the waves. "-this is not shadow! We have bodies! We have hunger! There are damn well fish swimming around! This isn't the World-After!" "So where are we?" "It's some illusion of Tikah, that's what's happening! It's trapped us here to feed on us!" Sanvo, a younger female, eyed the argument for a while, and then wandered off to the shore to get a better look around at things. While she had no intention of going out very far from shore, she thought that - if this place was an illusion, or an afterlife, or something, then it wasn't all that terrifying. The lack of fresh water was worrying, but as for the rest - Sanvo felt a warm breeze blow across her face, and listened to the sound of the waves, which was like nothing she had ever heard before. Surely a place of doom couldn't be like this.

Back on base, the ensign continues to converse with the captain about approaching the party of stragglers, determined to make sure they are handled in a swift and efficient manner only dependant on their first impression towards the safir. «Shall we assemble the convoy and investigate the epicenter of the cell?»

«We shall.» She begins walking toward the outpost's garage, the rest of the search-and-rescue team (that had come with her initially) marching behind her in perfect lockstep.

Imar joins in the march, approaching the garage and walking up to her assigned vehicle at the front of the line. She and Captain Velidde would be leading the convoy out to the epicenter as they usually would in a scenario like this. «And with any fortune on our side, we can at least shelter them with some degree of autonomy.»

As the day reached its height, a very small spring was discovered further inland, this one with fresh water. Most of those who had been huddled around the brackish pond started racing their fellows to the spring, since it was, after all, much better-tasting. Sanvo decided not to join in the rush. The water from the pond hadn't killed her yet, and she was fascinated by the sea. She had even gone so far as to try getting far out enough to swim, though this resulted in her being bowled over a few times by waves. After heaving herself back up onto the shoreline, she stared down the shoreline again, taking in the sight of it. Off in the distance, she saw something shining. Or glittering. Like obsidian, or like the metal some of the other tribes had. After a few minutes, she realized it was moving. If it was alive, then it was awfully big, or awfully reflective.
Avatar
Yoshiman400 15-Dec-18 11:17 PM
The shining mass in the distance was surely not alive--by its own animation in any case--but it was large in number, as several of the cruisers approached what was the epicenter of the storm. With the cell itself receded from the sky, the lead vehicle begins to slow down about a mile and a half from the coastline, appearing to beeline well to the side of Sanvo, whoaing up safely as the sand rises from the water, and then plops down to a gentle stop on the shore. The other cruisers in the convoy approach in turn.
«Captain Velidde, I'm sure this storm had to carry more than the one lifeform. It did appear large enough on the radar where such material turbulence had to be sufficiently impressive.»

Velīđe nods, studying the draconoid creature carefully. «Without a doubt, there are more of it… or rather, them.» It is apparent from the subtext of that missive that she recognizes Sanvo’s sapience, almost certainly via her sixth sense.

Imar looks to the doors of her cruiser, adamant to step out and try to help the little thing, or defend herself from it if Amahira forbid it is hostile. She already has one of her lower hands grabbing for her crossbow in case of the latter, quietly holstering it onto her back once more after undoing her safety restraints. «Even then, it appears we should follow our standard protocol: you and I lead and call in the rest if they retaliate.»

Sanvo goggled at the sight of the things that had deposited themselves on the beach. They were huge beasts, of a sort that she'd never seen in the desert, and they had... flown? Floated? What were they? What did they intend? Were they hungry? Her empathy could not reach them any more than it could reach anything else, so she couldn't read them. Her honor demanded that she face the things. (The fact that she had the sea to her back and didn't know if she could sidle around the things was entirely incidental.) She started to speak, accidentally wheezed, and cleared her throat, trying to sound more confident than she was. "Tin kiya ihwet?" she called out - What do you want?

«I see no reason not to stick to the script», Velīđe says as her cruiser parks on the beach. A moment later, its door opens, and she sends, «The curtain is drawn, and with it the bones cast.» Out of the lead car come a few four-armed, blue-skinned elvenoids, clad in black and silver robes with light gray boots, and armed with things that look like teeny tiny bows carrying fletchless arrows, as well as some sort of devices on their chests with black circles in the middle. The creatures make a show of putting away their bow-things, line up, bow their heads, and telepathically transmit the following with cloaked empathy & a measuredly inviting subtext: «We come in peace, on the behalf of Vāstra II, eldest sister and foremost mother, queen of Finerámnen and empress of the Safir Alliance.» They wait for Sanvo to respond before continuing.

Sanvo's eyes had nearly bugged out of her skull when the huge creatures had opened up and disgorged... smaller creatures. That were blue. And clad in garments that looked awfully hot. And, it occurred to her, were armed, though she was relieved to see them put the weapons away. She had no idea what was going on, but at least it didn't seem dangerous... And then words arrived in her head, there was a faint feeling like a change in pressure, and then the empathic emissions of her surroundings flooded in, as if they had always been available. She cried out in surprise, and clutched her head, blinking. From the direction of the trees, several other Hwimik, having come to investigate Sanvo's earlier shouting, emerged, staring at the cruisers in bafflement.

Imar blinks slightly at the horde of Sanvo's friends coming out to the coast. She glances to Captain Velidde and nodding, not reaching for her weapon as she sees the Hwimik are not giving a hostile first impression. She locks eyes with Sanvo again and nods to her. «I assure you, we are not here to attack you. In fact, we wish more for your safety on a planet you are likely unfamiliar with.»

Sanvo had lived all her life being able to read emotions. Of animals, at least - everyone knew civilized creatures hid their empathic emissions from detection. Being able to read thoughts was another matter. Being able to project either emotions or thoughts was entirely unheard of. "How are you doing that?" She spoke the words aloud, but their meaning was visible in her mind. Sanvo noticed the other Hwimik gently sidling around the... steeds? Very fancy carts?... that the blue-skins had come in. They looked nervous; some of them had obsidian-tipped spears, though they hadn't yet aimed them at anything. She hissed at them. "Don't do anything to piss them off, you idiots!" "What are they?" Iktim asked, not taking her suspicious eyes off the safir. Sanvo had never particularly liked Iktim, who was one of the higher-ranking females and wielded her status with all the tact and subtlety of a mallet to the head. "They can speak words into the head," Sanvo said. "They say they come on behalf of some high-ranker. They want us to be safe." Iktim's facial markings darkened in a display of dominance. "Tell them we're fine. We don't need help." Sanvo snorted, and turned back to Imar, wondering how to proceed. She had idea how to project words into someone else's head, so she tried to think them as clearly as she could inside the confines of her own skull. 《That's Iktim,》she thought. 《She's an idiot. I am Sanvo. We are proud people, but this place is very strange to us and there are children to keep fed. What kind of safety did you have in mind?》

Imar blinks and cracks a bit of a smile when she is able to read the surface thoughts Sanvo is projecting, taking a brief sigh of relief. «I am relieved your pack seem to be safe here, but still you have most likely been thrown onto a land completely different and remote from your home. Above all you ought to have a stable settlement, or knowledge of the territory if you are a nomadic group.»

«Additionally,» Velīđe added, «this world is itself not safe, being infamous for the type of storm that swept you away here, and legion indeed are they.» She brushes a strand of hair out of her face. «We wish for the time being to house youse at the outpost that we have established here, with the long-term goal of either returning youse home or, be that not possible, finding youse a permanent home within the Safir Alliance.»

Sanvo chewed on this news for a few minutes She had no idea what awaited at this outpost, but if there were other wonders to see, perhaps it would be worth it. «I wouldn't mind it myself,» she replied eventually, «but I can only speak for myself. We will need to speak to the others so they can decide - and you may need to explain a few things to everyone. Like what this alliance of yours is.»

Imar tells Sanvo that is highly recommended for the Hwimik to stay lodged in the safir base for the time being. As the planet is under their (joint?) domain and that the majority of safir occupancy is by military folk like herself well-versed in the meterologically paranormal, they have taken a vow of responsibility for those within reasonable distance of any bases on the planet. Although she assures to Sanvo that there is plenty of room for the tribe to explore if they wish to do so, she is very clear to state that they have authority to punish the tribe if they are found attracting unwanted conflict with native wildlife or other stragglers. Shyriath 02-Jan-19 11:26 PM
Sanvo considered this. Some of it she still did not understand. Particularly, the Hwimik had never had, or encountered, a organized military. People just fought when and where they needed to fight to survive; sometimes, if there needed to be more than one involved, a whole group would do it. But the idea she was telepathically receiving, of people whose entire purpose was to be trained and ready to fight, and to obey orders to do so, was baffling. But the basic idea she thought she could grasp. The Hwimik, though they had not intended it, had nonetheless arrived in this place; it seemed to belong to these safir, who wished it to remain peaceful; and if the Hwimik did not take this into account, they would face consequences. Any Hwimat matriarch who'd had to deal with trespassers on her territory could see the parallel there. «Much of what you're telling me,» she said cautiously, «is strange. But I think I know what you mean, and that I can explain this to the others - enough, at least, to keep things as you want them.» Increasing numbers of Hwimik were peering out of the brush now, goggling at the safir and their vehicles. Apparently word had been getting around during the conversation. «I should probably start talking soon, before they start getting the wrong idea,» she added uneasily. (edited)

A few minutes passed while Velīđe glanced back and forth between Imar and Sanvo. She then cleared her throat; like most of her species, she was not used to physically speaking. She bowed again to the newcomer group of hwimik, the other members of the platoon following suit, and then spoke in a strangely-accented version of the hwimat language: “Welcome to the planet Šēňajišàrātui. We come in peace, on the behalf of Vāstra II, eldest sister and foremost mother, queen of Finerámnen and empress of the Safir Alliance. I am Captain Velīđe Mateus, of the Combined Starfleet of the Safir Alliance, first officer of Šēňajišàrātui Outpost. We have come both to formally welcome you to your new homeland and to warn you that, outside of the walls of our outpost, it is not safe, not least as you yourself have experienced — the native flora and fauna seem to define misoxenia. Sanvo had found the experience of composing the speeches... strange. Especially since she was sure she hadn't fully understood some of what the safir had wanted to say. 'Starfleet' in particular had seemed to cause trouble; the Hwimik had never had either a military or any vehicle more complicated than a raft or a cart. When Velīđe, much to the surprise of her audience, began speaking in poorly pronounced but understandable Hwimpilh, the word had to be rendered by 'party-of-warriors-who-patrol-the-stars'. Most of the Hwimik assumed this was poetic license. Sanvo, who through their telepathic contact had a much better perspective on what Velīđe had meant, had a hazy impression of bubbles of life drifting in the cold darkness of the sky, and shivered. The safir party were then treated to an example of the Hwimik decision-making process. It was clear from the beginning that they were not the sort to agree to things just because others thought it was a good idea - some of them, indeed, seemed to be embarrassed or insulted that they were finding themselves agreeing with particular individuals. While some voices got more attention than others, usually females with very dark facial markings, it did not appear that anyone in particular was in charge.
Broadly speaking, there were two schools of thought. One, pushed by some of the more status-conscious females and the unmarried males, was that the Hwimik needed no protection and would happily fight whatever crossed their path; but, slowly, the others, particularly those with children to look after, coalesced around the idea that cooperating with the safir would be far better; they still did not know how to live in this place and could not risk the lives of the young in taking the time to find out. There were others, too, like Sanvo, who felt that there were other opportunities in the situation. "Clearly," she proclaimed, making a direct appeal to the compulsive curiosity of the young males, "these safir know of many interesting things that we have never seen before. There is nothing out here of any great interest to us, but who knows what wonders we might see if we go with them?" This appeared to have the desired effect. One by one, the assembled Hwimik indicated their willingness to go with the safir to their outpost, with a few sulky and reluctant individuals giving in when it became clear that they would be in an uncomfortably small minority.

Though Sanvo had estimated that there were certainly no more than that, there was a certain amount of mutual counting before everyone seemed satisfied that there would be room for everyone. The pack started gathering up such things as they had with them with the vaguely festive air of tourists going on holiday - though, given that they were headed somewhere with a much more reliable food source, this was understandable. They had mouths to feed. A number of the Hwimik were quite young, though only a few were small enough to be carried (the ones doing the carrying all seemed to be males). The safir continued to receive wide-eyed looks from the children. As they began to cautiously approach the vehicles, the safir got a good look at the objects they carried with them. Most wore either no clothes at all or some kind of leather harness to which pouches could be attached; such tools as could be seen were made exclusively of wood, bone, or stone, especially - for blades - obsidian. There was some jewelry in evidence, consisting of the same materials as their other manufactures. Overall, there was no evidence that the pack had ever left the Stone Age.

The Hwimik filed into the transports, though 'filed' would perhaps be a poetic description at best. They did not seem to be the sort to line up in an orderly fashion, and various individuals moved around to be closer to someone they liked, farther from someone they disliked; some interrupted their own waiting to circle the vehicles and look from them at all angles (one actually spread wings and landed atop a transport before being shooed off), and others pushed their way through so they could see inside sooner. Some would notice that a particular transport was filling up faster, assume it was better, and try to get on it as well, resulting in brief shouting matches before they could be herded elsewhere. At last, however, the pack was stored inside, safe for the moment but industriously poking around the transport interiors to see if there was anything interesting.

Vāstra II 17-Jan-19 12:52 AM
The safir filed in next, in a fashion that could only be described as orderly, sorted roughly by rank, and taking whichever seats were still available. The interiors of the transports were a flat gray, and quite spartan in appointments, with three front seats — one above the other two, crewing a gun — and several more lining the walls behind them, each of the seats having a five-point harness.

At least the safir have been ensured the decency of guiding the reptilians to their outpost, with Imar one of the many to drive them back. Now knowing the friendly demeanor of the tribe, they cruise back at a pace a bit more leisurely than during their outbound trip.
Nonetheless, on their return to the outpost, it is politely requested that the hwimik form an orderly congregation inward so they can be properly counted and their new living arrangements tabulated, especially if the count were to fluctuate at some point by birth, death, or estrangement.

Shyriath 17-Jan-19 10:13 PM
The Hwimik had seemed fascinated by the trip, which had been the most leisurely form of movement they'd ever experienced, but the request for orderly arrangement seemed to confuse them; they attempted to form a line but arguments began to break out over who was in front. Eventually, they settled for grouping together as families and staying put (which required a bit of creative distraction of the children) for as long as they could manage.

Some time later, the convoy reärrived at the outpost, each car plopping down gently in a huge garage attaached to the main fortress. One by one, the gunners dropped down and opened the doors of their transports, the safir debarking before the hwimik. Once everyone was in the garage, three of the safir began circling the hwimik, counting them.

Even sitting still - a task made increasingly difficult by the children of the group, who had largely enjoyed the ride in the convoy but were now bored and hungry - there was some quality about the Hwimik that made one reluctant to be too sure in one's count of them. They gave the impression of wandering around loose and poking things, even if they were doing no such thing. At last, however, the count yielded a number. There were 114 Hwimik in the garage, forty-five females and sixty-nine males. Some twenty-one of them were children. Most of the groupings appeared to be either families or bands of unattached males, but there was also a loose collection of several unattached females who had mostly ended up corralled together by default; they were all young adults but apparently had little else in common. Sanvo sat among this group as if pretending not to be anywhere near it.

Subsequent to the full count, Velīđe starts taking down the names of individual hwimik, and attempting to make a list of who is in what group among them.

Imar is still busy prepping provisions and other necessities for the dimensional refugees in the meantime, making sure they have supplies provided by the base for whatever they can't forage on their own, especially with their lack of knowing their surroundings.

The assembled Hwimik began to get restless, and some of them, particularly the unmarried males, started getting up and wandering around as soon as they'd given out their names. For beings accustomed to living in tents and burrows, the garage was an impressive sight - it was, by a wide margin, the largest indoor space any of them had ever been in, even if all the safir and Hwimik milling around, and the vehicles parked there, made it seem smaller than it was. And there was metal - metal tools, metal parts. The Hwimik did not see much metal, which was therefore extremely valuable to them, and many of the wandering figures felt compelled to pick up and handle the objects they found. A smaller percentage, who were not above petty larceny in the face of such profligate wealth, tried to tuck the more portable tools into bags or under their wings, and had to be convinced to surrender their plunder by the guards.
Avatar
Vāstra II 15-Feb-19 10:14 PM
Which guards would then lead them off to the brig, either for the night or a few days depending on the value of tool the individual hwimat attempted to lift. This drove consternation unto the face of Velīđe, who broadcast a psychic message asking the hwimik not to take what is not theirs. (edited)

Yoshiman400 15-Feb-19 10:27 PM
Imar sighs quietly from her part of the office, making sure her compatriots aid in delivering the packs their provisions for the area, trying to assure the hwimik that everything will be taken care of if they can just settle down for a few minutes, despite the chaos of their numbers.
Avatar
Shyriath 24-Feb-19 08:26 PM
With some regret, those Hwimik that had not yet been caught plundering quietly put their loot back - not always in the same place where they'd got it from, making it somewhat more difficult to find again for their hosts, but at least it afforded them some plausible deniability. The arrival of the provisions gave them something else to occupy themselves, at any rate, and most of the Hwimik stopped what they were doing to examine them.
Avatar
Yoshiman400 28-Feb-19 09:30 PM
As for the safir? She's just quietly observing for the moment, sending privately to Velidde that she is very relieved the Hwimik are taking to their surroundings and new overlords/ladies in a mostly collected manner.
Avatar
Vāstra II 22-Mar-19 07:36 PM
Velīđe nodded at Imar's message, responding with a feeling of mutual relief at the calm demeanor of the hwimik heretofore. Meanwhile, the guards started to show them to various dormitories, often — but not always, owing to space concerns — in the groups into which the hwimik had sorted themselves earlier, or subgroups thereof.
Avatar
Yoshiman400 22-Mar-19 09:02 PM
Imar is still filling out paperwork, detailing short- and long-term plans for her fellow safir to handle the hwimik. The papers are incredibly detailed, going over dietary suggestions, lesiure accomodations, reproductive habits and health, and so on.

The Hwimik families gawked openly at the rooms they were shown to. Everything from the artificial lighting to the furniture was strange, but possibly the strangest thing of all was the idea of having a door. A space that you could shut yourself into for protection? Marvelous! The only thing to worry about was... well, was other Hwimik. To be fair, that appeared to be quite enough of an issue. Any families small enough to be housed together almost immediately felt the need to delineate their new living space, haggling over whose half was whose. The arguments of the single females housed together were far worse, because each one got less space to call exclusively her own and they all wanted some; the more pushy, intimidating ones, moreover, wanted the best beds, and seemed annoyed that the beds were all built the same. Eventually, to their minder's relief, there was a vague and arbitrary consensus that the beds nearest the door were "less secure" and the dominant females moved to the back of the room to squabble over those. Sanvo proved not to be in this group. The rooms used by the unattached males, by contrast, quickly took on a festive atmosphere. Under the circumstances they most resembled a childrens' slumber party, but one got the impression that if the males had only had access to music and drink, it would have been much more raucous. Several Hwimik started bringing up the question of where they were supposed to take care of certain bodily functions. There was, they said, nowhere they could see to bury their waste; obviously they had never encountered lavatories.

Yoshiman400 25-Mar-19 11:17 PM
Barring certain telepathic blocs that may have been installed, Imar unwillingly catches a glimpse of their hygenic concerns, getting up from her desk to assist the Hwimik in guiding them to the bathrooms and explaining their use, including the magic bury--er, flush--lever! Otherwise she continues to let them be for the time being until they are ready to be summoned for meal time.
Avatar
Vāstra II 25-Mar-19 11:46 PM
It wasn't much longer before Ardian Míšaþ Alūri telepathically contacted Velīđe and Imar, asking them how the handling of the new arrivals was going. A few of the guards, meanwhile, remained posted in the hallway where the hwimik were quartered, the others returning to their own rooms or whatever other task may require their attention. In addition to the beds, which were somewhat thin but outfitted with comfy-looking blankets and pillows, there were desks with oddly angled black panels built into them, and safir-sized boxes with poles running horizontally through them near the top & another compartment at floor level, numbered equally to the beds.

(AHEM)
Imar relays that it is going remarkably smoothly for a group of stragglers this large and somewhat feral at that, considering their more "rural" lifestyle compared to the safirs' own. Her main hope is that the poor cooks don't get too overswarmed once dinner comes around.

Ardian Míšaþ Alūri can be received empathically radiating relief and contentment at Imar's message, having worried that a fight would break out between them and the safir, or worse among them, given their draconoid appearance and tribalistic demeanor. She sends that there should be no problem cooking for them, given the number of nauts stationed here that are secondarily billeted as cooks.
Avatar
Shyriath 26-Mar-19 12:35 AM
The Hwimik had, after some brief examination, ignored the lockers, whose purpose was unclear to them but were obviously too big for a Hwimat to carry things around in, though some of the children derived amusement from trying to hide in them. The desks were a little more interesting, since they provided work surfaces that were slightly more convenient than the floor - not that there was much workable material here to deal with. There were no stores of wood or bone or stones that they'd seen. Most of them had therefore adjourned to the beds, and, after some puzzling over the way the blankets and pillows were arranged, started piling them into nestlike shapes. Sanvo, in the females' dormitory, found herself prodding at the black panel on one of the desks, since it seemed to have some purpose, and after several minutes managed to press a spot that caused it to light up with a complete lack of noise and display incomprehensible symbols. She let out a cry of surprise and fell over backward, prompting a chorus of shouts and gabbling from the others.

<Halian> *A weekday in the Queendom of Firnerámnen's second city means heavy traffic at its newest, and busiest, starport. Starcraft of varying shapes, sizes, and origins crisscross the taxiways and the skies around the terminal building, designed to look like an angel's wing, with a gate under each flight feather. The runways are strips of white in a sea of yellow streetlamps, with helpful blinking *
<Halian> *lines of blue and green directing pilots toward them. On any given day there are more than fifty different species arriving at, departing from, or transiting through Qalani Docklands — insectae carrying crates of chitin-wrought bulletproof vests, qeegubmorein shipping colour-changing paint to the artistes of Miše and nearby, the coralfolk collective with her biannual bounty of tantalizing *
<Halian> trinkets, and so on, and so forth.
<Halian> *The most numerous species here present is, of course, the safir, each one recognizable by their vibrantly colored, often excessively long hair, and wrapped in robes every bit as colorful. Most prominent among them, for our purposes, is a man named Tekumel, sitting on a bench near the station from which the people mover departed to the other terminals. He stood easily a foot shorter than *
<Halian> the female majority of his species, and had hair of a similar blue hue to his eyes.

@Vāstra II A sensor pinged on a Safiran somewhere vessel in unclaimed space, near the gas giant of an unextraordinary system. Intelligence reports hadn't indicated any known cultures residing within this sector, nor of any particular anomalies detected within the region. It was something new, which a further scan would reveal was bearing towards their position. The sudden mystery would, soon, be answered by the arrival of a vessel within communication range of the Safiran ship. It was notably sleek, constructed from a dark, reflective material, but otherwise was built in a construction standard to most spacefaring vessels. A front, a rear, and multiple ports for exhaust from engines within. The only question was, who did it belong to. A communications channel quickly opened to the Safirans, apparently those who had just arrived wished to communicate further...

The exploratory craft Powder Snow-14 drifted in a high orbit about Lýreí VI, watching for any indication of other sophonts in the neighborhood. Its watchmind, Xírel Agawe, and its captain, Áhaca ‘Ipfó, herself once a watchmind, were two of the few hands awake at this hour, albeit barely so, treading water in the wake of her sisters' sleeps and trances. Both were in farsight trances, their minds fully expanded, sensing as far from the slender aluminum craft as their powers would permit. It was only a few minutes before reveille when Xírel Agawe felt a blip abruptly prod at the edge of vis consciousness. It felt nothing like any other prior contact ve had had before, this realization immediately rousing ver from vis trance, though her mind remained expanded. Ve reached out to vis captain — as softly as ve could, given the unusual state of vis psyche — and received from her at the exact same time. «Remain aware, but pack not away your mind», she ordered. «We are not alone.» Within an hour, the entire complement, some fifty souls, were awake and briefed on the presence of the bogey — which Áhac Ípfó had, of course, confirmed by checking the sensor logs, before letting the bridge crew take their stations. Shortly thereafter came the opening of a communications channel from the mystery craft, which was followed with the captain's first official order of the day: to have sent to the unknown ship the Safir Alliance's standard greeting package for unknown craft, which consisted of simple counts of prime numbers and chemical elements, coördinates of several pulsars used for hyperspace navigation, a few simple sentences in Classical Āirumāli, etc. Her second was to have the medical officer fetch up some medication for a headache, to be expected of this sudden rousal from a farsight trance. The craft remained silent for the better part of its own hour, hovering silently a fair distance from Safiran ship. The communication channel had closed almost immediately after they had been sent the standard greeting, an indication that, whoever it was out in space, were responsive. It seemed to glower in the void, hard edges and dark material the only indication as to its owner's culture, but certainly far from an absolute picture. Almost abruptly as it had earlier, communications were opened again, this time with more than expectant silence. A series of transmissions on the same frequency were received. The first was the return of the original messages in its entirety, before it was shortly followed by a new series of signals, containing symbols, diagrams, and other items, presumably a greeting package of their own. The frequency was silent for a moment longer, save for interference from anything in the cosmic background, before the frequency buzzed again, containing a parallel set of messages, at a lower frequency, the Safiran message, and at a higher frequency, a message distinct from the first, containing its own information, time-matched with the original greeting provided by the Safirans. The likely conclusion was it was their own translation of the Safiran message, as the higher frequency message matched each symbol with one of their own, some repeating from their first message. The channel stayed open. Silent, and expectant. (edited)

It was some hours before the sapient artificial intelligence aboard Powder Snow-14 cracked the puzzle of the return messages, and an equal block of time before the ship sent its own translations of those messages, in as close as possible a match to the provided format, following it up with one more message: a set of slow-scan TV pictures of safir. The communication channel shuttered closed as the images finished transferring, the predictable response from the visitor from another corner of the galaxy. The crew would have to mind itself with what they'd been provided for the next several hours, as the black vessel did little to respond any further hails or scans, simply...floating there. The better part of a day's time passed, leaving both ships to orbit aimlessly around the beautiful gas giant that was Lyrei VI. The vessel had since adjusted its course to match orbit with the Safirans, but aside from that active movement, and the assurance there was some glimmer of activity in from the beings within the vessel across from them, they were quiet. The silence, hopefully for the better, was interrupted by the frequency opening again. A series of mono-frequency 'beeps' were transmitted, creating a three part tone, before what the Safiran had likely been waiting to hear was broadcasted. Speech. "We represent the Veth Imperium, identity yourselves by name and purpose." The message was followed by what seemed to be their own language, or at least the spoken form, before both were repeated once more.

The slow swirling of blue, orange, and violet gasses on the planet below provided a brilliant backdrop to the unfolding first contact as the crew of the Powder Snow-14 listened to the message. Some minutes later, Áhac Ipfó finally took her seat, opening the microphone and ditching the sapient AI as mediator, in accordance with Alliance protocol, speaking to the veth ship directly in Classical Āirumāli. Áhaca ‘Ipfó rāmoǧa. Íqre ou ħelalārōz trīvitutyz Dyneþīłē-Kūedī vēlrētārir. Íqek safīza ē Ísērókāéle Safiljā kānivruz. Seráelás ňéđařuz. Il okelaw viþèi kē tōrin viþèi bwahīnrul. The captain leaned back in her chair, leaving her mind expanded, hoping that this disordered state will lead her or Xírel Agawe to glean some understanding about the veth as they awaited their formal reply. In the opposing vessel, a different scene was taking place. Sitting in the center of the room on a raised platform was a typical Veth specimen, currently sitting, staring forward, as if they could see the beings on the other side of the conversation. Their seat was separate from the rest of the room, with others attending consoles at various ends, save two more Veth, who were directly to their forward left and right on the same platform. The response played back, and the leftmost Veth quickly began clicking their claws on the console, the message played back from a device attached to the right side of their head. The Veth rapidly input into the console again, the sound playing once more, before the device was tapped. The figure at the center of room heard the noise from their own device, what had started as a Safiran captain's introduction, was now in the voice of a plain, forward-speaking Veth, translated for this one to hear. The side of the Veth's mouth raised slightly, forming what most would recognize as 'a smirk.' They leaned forward, hands clasped as they looked forward. "This is the vessel Voidborn - 023, overseen by Executor Vitraxi Ose, We are surveying star systems for resource acquisition, as directed by the Veth 27th Industrial Advisory Council." There was a pause, as the Veth on the right of Vitraxi furiously was working at their console, before they soon tapped their device as well, The Executor didn't even look in their direction before continuing their message. "You represent an unknown. What is your interest in this system?" (edited)

Áhaca ‘Ipfó tilted her head, deep in thought as she waited for the Voidborn-023 to respond. She hated waiting, and so cursed herself for signing up for the Star Navy, scout duty doubly so. She stood up from he seat at the top back of the Powder Snow-14's bridge, pacing back and forth for a while before excusing herself to the head, leaving the first mate in charge, if fleetingly. She returned in the middle of the veth ship's reply, and duly bid it reread, a textual version also appearing on each console. While she did not outwardly show it, her crew could feel from her empathic emissions that she was perturbed by the veth ship's stated mission. She looked over to one of the communications officers, no doubt sending a telepathic message to her. Frantic consultation of the Alliance Gazetter ensued, then, as the emerald moon of Lýreí VI came into view, that officer sent the safir answer to Vitraxi Ose's question: “This Lýreí system is within the borders of the Safir Alliance, and not presently open to resource extraction. We are authorised to escort you to the nearest consuless, seven jumps away at Atsājn, for formal first contact with the Veth Imperium.” (edited)

Vitraxi Ose kept a cool composure as he awaited a response from the Safirans, the tips of his claws clicking as he drummed them on each other. Despite his still pose and stoic composure, he was considering future responses. His xenostudies team hadn't reported in for several standard hours, and the assigned council observer had already twice reminded him of his primary duty as Executor of this vessel. He'd acknowledged it both times, but he was sure that at least a third reminder was imminent. First contact, of all things, was not a time to forget his responsibilities. The response came sooner than he'd expected, and he allowed himself a moment to relax as it was translated into his communication device. The council was harsh, but they weren't obstinate. The opportunity here was more than enough to justify a delay, he was not the only vessel currently scanning asteroids, planetoids, and star systems for exploitable resources, and certainly the opportunity for contact with another power was worth more than the sum of this system's resources. He blinked, a deliberate act, as the translation was passed to him. Unsurprising. The Safirans had already been in orbit when they had arrived, it was a natural conclusion they had claim to it. The invitation, however, was more unusual. An open willingness to escort them into their space, if the translation and his own assumptions were correct, indicated a willingness to have their innards observed. More than that, a surveyor vessel Executor and his crew, to initiate first contact procedures, Vitraxi Ose reclined into his seat, reflecting briefly over past first contact scenarios. Most had been deliberate meetings on neutral territory between species of inferior industrial power, and more than enough had been the Veth arriving on their own terms. To accept the invitation was to go against precedent, if not procedure. But to decline.... (edited)
"Powdersnowe-14, your government's claim to this sector is acknowledged. Provide instructions to the destination Atsajin, and we shall follow your escort." His rightmost aide looked at him, to confirm the order. The look he gave back was enough, and the response was sent. Giving the smallest sight he could, Vitraxi switched frequency to the helm crew, providing another order. "Send the following communication to the Communication Node at Eising-Krel-7. 'Foreign power discovered. Contact initiated. Proceeding with diplomatic procedures. Await expected coordinates of destination."

It was shortly after the first message was received from the Voidborn-023 that Áhaca ‘Ipfó had ordered communications channels opened via ansible with the consuless at Atsājn and with the Ivory Ascendant in Aňira, as dictated by the Safir Alliance's first contact protocols. While she waited for their replies, she felt Xírel Agawe slip into a meditative trance, shutting out vis conventional senses in favor of attempting to read the thoughts of the veth ship's crew with vis still-expanded mind. She watched ver, too, as ve drifted upward, seemingly unaffected by the ship's artificial gravity, and bounced gently against the portion of the massive video display that formed the bridge's ceiling. Her reverie was interrupted by a multi-tone pulsing sound from her terminal, indicating a return ansible message. She retrieved a bone-conducting earpiece from within, a small light on which pulsed in the same rhythm as that sound, and placed it around her long, pointed ear, listening intently to the response of the Atsājn legation; she could notice that the communications officer was wearing one as well, and no doubt listening to the same message. Once the line to distant stars had snapped shut, she put the earpiece away, telepathically issuing a command to the communications officer to provide directions for the relatively short trip to Atsājn. Vitraxi Ose waited, along with the rest of their crew, with anticipation, or at least with any amount they were permitted. The order had already been given to prepare for a diplomatic meeting, and although most of the command and lesser crew were properly educated on such matters, it was likely a number had overlooked seeking further training in such endeavors. It was rare the investment was worth it, from both the individual and to the Diplomatic Corporate, for our of the organization citizens. There was much to prepare, and the amount of time there was was certainly a question on their minds. The Voidborn's link to the Eisking-Krel communication node was currently silent, but there was no doubt someone further down the chain was awaiting further information, or were formulating whether this counted as insubordination. 'Technically,'' was likely being used by someone, light years away, to refer to the situation he had presented them with, and there was little he could do to prevent it at this point. The thought was mercifully cut short by another transmission from the Safiran vessel, translated quickly from his immediate left subaltern as a series of directions. Presumably to their destination for them to be escorted to. Vitraxi sent the message directly to stafff below, allowing them to decipher the precise direction, energy required, and time consumed by the path they were about to undertake. Several quiet minutes passed, before his rightmost subaltern alerted him to an incoming message from Eisking-Krel. A response.
"Meeting Acknowledged. Transmit expected destination and additional information on entity, and proceed to destination. Prepare for further diplomatic support within a standard week,
(edited)
The venture had been approved. Someone had found their discoveries so far interesting, at least more so than the xenostudies team had, apparently. Or the breach in code of conduct was either too small to care for, or their goal to great to impede now that they were communicating. Vitraxi filed away the notion the 'diplomatic support' would likely be there to replace him, not to support him, in whatever negotiations the Safirans intended to open. Typical. "Transmit information and destination to Eisking-Krel. Notify Powedersnow-14_ we are prepared to be escorted." He paused, before speaking one more command. "Vizier-Chell, you have command." Vitraxi stood up, stepping away from his seat and moving towards the rear of the command bridge. He, and much of his immediate non-command, had work to do.

The slow ascent of its yellow giant star heralded another morning on Atsājn, casting long rays through the space between the skyscraping hardwoods as oranges and purples played across the midwinter sky. A few safir, nagas, and driders, as well as one Megarhyssa-taur, clad only in vividly-colored capes of hair whose lengths outstripped their heights, lay drifting in and out of trance on the beach that framed the mirror-like waters of Starfield Lake, bathing in the rays of the newborn morning. A trio of coralmaid sentinelesses watched the group from some hundreds of yards behind, their stern countenances framed by myriad spines: which collective safiroids guarded the consulate of the Safir Alliance attending this world, still at the peripheries of that nation and as such mostly virginal in nature, barring for the most part the complex of low-slung buildings that seemed to blend into the white-sand strand. One of the safir craned vis head up, staring off into the distance, as ve felt the consciousnesses of Atsājn's Messengers, watchmind, and other such high-level telepaths slowly expand to overspread the world, half-lidding vis eyes as ve seemed to bask in the sensation of their presence, snippets of their telepathic conversations flitting in and out of vis mind, an unfortunate side effect of spreading their sentiences this thinly. Ve would also see the lights in the windows of the consulate extinguish, one by one, reflecting vis species' preference for natural light. The violette let a hazy smile paint ver face, lazily reaching out to one of those worldminds, who counted herself among vis mates. (edited)
Some miles away, a street sweeper droned as it scrubbed back and forth across one of the runways of Atsājn spaceport, scraping away what little rubber accumulated since its moon last waxed full over the forest aeternal. A space traffic controller watched it as she sipped from a cup of lukewarm arra, wondering whether its simple existence, slave to the rules etched into its brain, would be preferable to her own, spent staring around the clock — for blessed with evolution beyond the need to sleep was she — at holographic diagrammata that reflected a local space ever bereft of traffic. The proud Lessan cast a telepathic invective upon whomsoever might wish to visit this poor simulacrum of her beloved homeworld, drawing dirty stares from the two other controllers who sat above the spaceport. She was just about to elaborate on her disdain for the world when a blue and red flash appeared at the fringes of their holographic displays, signaling a jump into the system… followed closely by another. She tilted her head and narrowed her eyes, thinking it acting out for the umpteen-greatgrossth time, doubly so when telepathically instructing the holograph to display beacon data of the ships' yielded information for only one of them. The blip on the Safir's display continued to exist, despite potential attempts by the controller to diagnose it as an error with the holograph. Its flight path was in sync with the visible ship that her instruments could detect, but otherwise providing no other visual or technical information beyond what their sensors could read. Even then, her prospects were few, as the bogey merely was detected as having a mass, some traces of travel at faster than light, and a few brief, outgoing wavelengths on an indecipherable frequency. it was as communicative as a dead rock. A rock that was apparently, moving with intent, as it followed the Safir vessel it had arrived behind towards Atsajn.

The space traffic controller, thinking the bogey perhaps a damaged ship or simply one with a beacon reticent to function properly, opened communication with both it and the Powder Snow-14, welcoming them to the Atsājn system, then instructing them to land on the eponymous planet as soon as possible to report to the consulate, as was standard procedure there. Fleeting bits of worldmind thought intruded upon her mind just after she closed her microphone, causing her, and her two coworkers, to flinch and rub their temples. After these invasions had subsided, the ravenne picked up a telephone also located on her desk, calling the Alliance legation stated on this damned huskworld — so her inner monologue called it — to report the impending arrival of those vessels.

The bogey responded with a confirmation to the controller's instructions, no voice or visual, merely acknowledgement of the message being received, as it continued its path down to the planet proper. Eventually, the vessel would be in visual distance to any of the planet's terrestrial or orbital sensors, not to mention the local Safir noosphere, indicating to whoever was observing that this was an entirely unfamiliar entity. At least to those who weren't aware of the diplomatic situation. The entrance into the atmosphere proceeded without concern, although of interest was their landing approach. The spaceport had been designed, clearly, for use by vessels entering and exiting atmosphere, with the presumption they would need significant speed to reach orbital heights, as well as returning with similar if not greater speeds. The Veth, in contrast to the typical Safir landing procedure, did not produce any method of slowing down via use of the runway, but two flaps on the posterior and anterior lower sections of the vessel's underbelly unfolded, producing a short jet of orange exhaust, significantly slowing the vessel down as it approached the main spaceport building, yet still kept it suspended in air. It landed, with as much grace as a vessel of its size could, when returning to a state of being grounded, a low, resounding thud emitted once it made contact with the ground.

The space traffic controller picked up her phone again, this time to call the consulate, that she might alert them to the presence of an unfamiliar craft not carrying Alliance-standard beacons, but, after sitting on hold for a few křójaw, she was informed by the operatrix that they were already aware, thanks to the work of the planet's worldminds, and that a contact team had been despatched. Meanwhile, a stair car puttered over from the terminal building to the craft, circling it a few times as the driver looked for a door on the side of the craft, as was the norm for safir air- and starcraft. Ultimately, after finding none, he gave up, parking it near the craft's nose. All was quiet for about a lāu until the Powder Snow-14 came into range first of the control tower's radar and then of its occupants' eyes, landing on the runway in a manner consistent with the starport's design. It then taxied over to the terminal building and parked near the Voidborn-023, prompting the naga stair car driver to drive over to the former, raising the stairs up to its door, whereupon the exploratory craft disgorged its complement of four-and-quarter dozen crewmembers, mainly safir.

The Veth vessel remained silent for the same period, besides glowering with its monochromatic sheen of black with a tint of amber-brown. The vessel had reported nothing to the control tower since it had entered atmosphere, and so far no other communications were being transmitted from within. There was activity taking place within it, as any telepaths nearby would detect, but what they were doing within was for the moment, a mystery. Until, that is, the underbelly of the craft began to peel open, a rhomboid-seam appearing within the craft's underbelly before it peeled away, revealing a ramp that slowly unfurled itself, before making contact to the ground with a light thud. The surface was flat, but was not the same material as the shell that encased the exterior craft, appearing as a more typical metal plating. More important of course, were the sounds of metal clinking across it, as movement could be seen from within the vessel. A set of thin, hoof-shaped boots began their descent down the ramp, then followed by a pair of columns that formed behind them on either side. It didn't take long for their owners to step beyond the threshold and from out underneath their ship, and into the sunlight of the Safir planet.
They were dressed in a mix of what seemed to be grey-black metal plate and ochre-fabric, the cloth-like material overlaid commonly around the shoulders and waist by metal pieces, though none reached or began beyond the waist. The collumn to the lead's right each bore a dull green insignia on their shoulders, while the ones on his left had an equally dull insignia colored blue. Both columns contained a dozen and a half members each, along with their own respective leaders who followed behind the one leading the movement. The leading member of the group, whose outfit was notable for having purple fabric over the standard ochre, bore a yellow insignia in the same location. Beneath their outfits, what could be seen, was dark chitin, frequently segmented, sharp, and angled. Their faces were the most notable part, providing an arthropod-like shape, with a park of large, dark, glaring eyes, with many of those assembled wearing a three-pointed headpiece with a veil behind the head. Some lacked such headwear, leaving the sight of a rounded, hairless cap for the top of their heads. The leader turned at a right angle from the vessel as he stepped out from under it, either column doing the same once they had done so as well, flanking the leader as they approached towards the Safir vessel. They stopped a distance away, perhaps a dozen feet away, expectantly, as they made no further movements towards the Safir or the spaceport. If they had a procedure for first-contact or meetings of importance, this seemed to be it.

The safir watched with rapt attention as the Voidborn-023 vomited forth its crew into the world. Which group of veth would see before the other craft a humanoid species with blue skin, four arms, and long, pointed, elflike ears, each of whom had vibrantly colored, usually straight, hair that unerringly reached at least to its owner's knees, and in the most extreme case trailed behind one blonde safir for at least as long as they were tall. Each of the individuals stood at least two meters tall, and was unfailingly possessed of a tightly curved figure wrapped in a dark blue outfit resembling a tunic and ankle-length skirt, each of which were festooned with colorful — usually white, always retroreflective — trim and fuzzy square patches, to some of which were attached insignia or tools. The bulk of the Powder Snow-14's crew had arranged themselves into six rows of eight, in front of which stood three more in a triangle formation. At back left of that triangle stood the officer of the boat, who had dark green hair — and matching lipstick! — as well as narrow gray eyes. At back right was a safir with beyond-floor-length stark white hair, whose round face betrayed otherworldly calm, especially since ve seemed to be asleep on vis feet. In front of them was the captain, the aforementioned, red-eyed, blonde, who easily stood above the rest, and was clutching the top of her head with one of her four hands, a discomforted expression on her face. Each of them stood with their feet shoulder-width apart, and their forearms behind their backs. Once the veth stopped, the captain composed herself, then she and her crew bowed their heads, and telepathically transmitted the following with cloaked empathy & a measuredly inviting subtext: «We come in peace, on the behalf of Vāstra II, eldest sister and foremost mother, queen of Firnerámnen and empress of the Safir Alliance.» (edited)

The eyes of the Veth leader at the front of the formation, as did many of those among those assembled, were briefly covered by a nicitating membrane before it quickly retreated, with some among the same group expressing some discomfort, a hand to their head or adjusting themselves in response to the telepathic message. Their leader however quickly overcame their discomfort, managing to maintain their pose even as some behind him still were dealing with the sensation. Their apparent leader stepped slightly to the side, leaving room for a Veth who had been trailing behind him to step foward, who was wearing a piece of technology in what most would assume was over the aural biology of the Veth. They nodded, before the leader turned back to the Safir. //"I am Vitraxi Ose of the Veth Imperium and curent Executor of the exploratory vessel the Voidborne. Our prescence here has been authorized by the Diplomatic Corp. located on Vethium-Prim, and as such I have been granted the temporary assignment of interfacing with your species in diplomatic terms until I am replaced."// They spoke in Veth, but the subordinate that had stepped forth translated into Saffir vocally. They seemed to have been prepared for the task of translating such a long string, as they performed the task with almost seamless precision. Practiced, and nearly perfect, their translation had been quite thorough. When they had finished, they look backed to Vitraxi, who began once more. //"We are unaccustomed to your method of communication, and request that further introductions be dictated in vocal conversation, if culturally and biolgically possible."//

The crew of the safir craft listened attentively to first the alien sounds of the veth's native language, and then to the same message in Classical Āirumāli. After they finished speaking, the officer of the boat lightly touched the back of her captain's neck, the two seeming to be lost in thought for several minutes. The captain then spoke up in the Āirumāli: “Áhaca ‘Ipfó speaks. I command the scouting starcraft Powder Snow-14. On behalf of all the divers citizens and species thereof, I wish to formally welcome youse to the Safir Alliance. “While we are amenable to your request, we should find it prudent to inform you that telepathy is the primary medium of communication among our species, and for many safir the sole method of communication.” The officer of the boat then repeated the same message in the language of the veth crew. As she translated for her captain, the blonde had pulled a small, rectangular device from one of her pockets, and was speaking into it in Lessan. Once she had finished her phone call, she spoke up again: “We are authorized to deliver youse up to the consuless here assigned, that formal diplomatic channels may be opened; to that end, transportation to the consulate is currently on its way to being provided.” And once again, the officer of the boat translated as best she could into the veth's language. The initial Āirumāli response was translated through the same subordinate, who then, upon being given a response in Vethian, turned to Vitraxi to confirm they were, for the most part, the same meaning. Executor Ose nodded, but delayed their response upon noticing the captain's use of a communications device, belayed their own response until she was finished. This did, even if slightly, seem to irk him, the membrane across his eye dilating by a few milimeters, and his poise shifting ever so slightly at the perceived annoyance. He did not, however, mention it in his response thereafter, and his subordinate translated the following. //"Your customs of communication are acknowledged, and will be followed as necessitated. We request when possible, however, in the interest of further uses of such, that 'telepathy' be used with the full knowledge of any such recipient in official communications between representatives of this current cadre of representatives from the Veth Imperium. If deemed necessary, my government will make a formal request for similar not if exact procedures for further diplomatic communications."// He didn't specify how that was meant to be done, either because Vitraxi didn't understand what could be done to easily inform one of such, or because it wasn't his place to settle such details. He was however, in the position to at least make the desire known, which indicated some level of hierarchy or lack of formality to his position. His request, however, did seem to have been made with legitimate interest behind it, judging by the discomfort others and himself had encountered with a telepathic medium, but it was uncertain if there was any additional compunction behind the request. (edited)
Once the translation into Āirumāli had been finished, Vitraxi resumed. //"My current representatives of my crew and subordinate to my authority within the bounds of our diplomatic discussion are Sub-Executrix-Helkir, to my left, who is designated as the head of Vessel Research and the Advancement in Material Interests, and Sub-Executor-Arsyx, to my right, designated as Lead Advocate of Personnel Safety, Security, and Supplies. With them are their respective subordinate staff of Immediate-Secondary-Tertiary, along with a subordinate from among my own for issues requiring my attention and to serve as translators. They will likewise be joining me in the pursuit of diplomatic interests with your government.// He paused, to allow both him and his translator to rest, given the absolutely verbose string that he had provided both him and the Safir with. At the mention of their titles and names, the two personnel stepped forth, nodding their heads towards Ose, before stepping back. A sign of acknowledgement, or deference, to their current superior. //"Remaining upon the vessel Voidborne, are the remaining personnel and crew whom are not required for initial proceedings. Upon such a time when it is deemed necessary and possible, they will also be permitted to venture from the vessel. In the interim, we require that no attempts are made to enter or interface with the Voidborne unless directly requested by either an individual from within, who will identify themselves as such as a Sub-Executor or under the authority of one, myself, my immediate subordinate Delkik, who is translating this, or my one of my two Sub-Executor make such a request to do so. //

The safir captain and her immediate subordinates nodded along as their counterparts spoke. Once the veth had finished, Áhaca ‘Ipfó turned, gesturing to the green-haired and -lipped safir, who had an elaborate white tattoo on the side of her face, and who seemed to eye the veth with cool disregard as her captain spoke. “Your request as regards telepathy is acknowledged and shall be adhered to. I greet Sub-Executrix Helkir and Sub-Executor Arsyx personally, and wish to introduce the professionals aboard Powder Snow-14. “To hand presently is Liţäməşşìləmëhiraţí, the officer of the boat, who dispenses with the enlisted girls aboard. At her right is Xírel Agawe, the watchmind; ve acts as a living repository of information, that the inherent difficulty of recording telepathy be avoided.” She then glided over to a raven-haired, yellow- safir in the first row of the bulk of the crew, who simultaneously bounced forward, bowing vis head in greeting to the veth, and then smiling brightly. “This will be the next most important woman on our crew, ɴǁá ʄõ ʈʼʊʊ, who, as the first mate, is responsible for dispensing the competencies of cargo management and the navigational watch. Ve also seconds my command, and relieves me as necessary. I regret that the rest of the crew have either song-names or no spoken names whatsoever, and that I must therefore omit their mention. As well, other women and girls not essential to contact have elected or been ordered to remain aboard, that the smooth operation of our vessel not be halted.” At that moment, two hover-busses pulled up on the tarmac beside the safir craft. “As previously alluded, the consuless here stationed summons us and youse for an audience with her, that formal diplomatic channels be opened. Shall youse come?” (edited)

Vitraxi listened, and observed, as the captain returned with her own introduction of her crew, providing a curt nod of acknowledgement to each named crew, and on the mention of the captain's inability to refer to the rest of her own crew, produced another nod as well, directed towards her as she spoke, Vitraxi's entourage did not reply with any such gesture, but did track who was being introduced as their Executor did. //"Your subordinates and your requisite crew are greeted, and your efforts are noted and appreciated. To those unnamed, I also extend this appreciation for your presence. // Though it was a minor violation of the standard formation, a few heads turned to view the hover-busses as they approached and parked by the Safiran craft, before quickly returning to formation and staring towards the Safiran crew. Expected, and inconsequential, in the scheme of things. //I, Vitraxi Ose, on behalf of my subordinates, their subordinates, and my crew, accept your invitation, and will proceed as directed so that we may establish such channels.//
