@State-Sanctioned Surveyor Do you think any of the nations already on the map are too large?
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/319981997143359491/674827005363224597/Daia.svg also, here's the .svg export of that map, though yet untested in Inkscape or similar
Avatar
Shyriath 21-Feb-20 01:47 AM
Since the map doesn't have a scale, that's a bit of a rough one. But just eyeballing it, none of them are probably very much bigger than the largest Earthly nations.
Avatar
Vāstra II 21-Feb-20 01:56 AM
Meanwhile, I can confirm that the SVG version of the map loads in Inkscape, though I don't have the Castellar font installed so “DAIA” looks wrong stick_out_tongue_safir
The SVG is 32,995.044 px wide, which is a scale of 6.7020 px/km. The PNG is 10,311 px wide, which is a scale of 2.0943 px/km.

throws together a scale in his working file.
@Vāstra II Still a little hard to tell, because on a rectangular map a scale is only really good for one particular latitude. But Firn is probably in the same class as Russia, if not smaller.
Avatar
Vāstra II 21-Feb-20 07:39 PM
At the equator
Firn Is a little bigger than Brazil
Avatar
Shyriath 21-Feb-20 07:47 PM
As for the earlier question about nations being the right size: one could make the argument that safir nations could be bigger, since if the Alliance can coordinate across interstellar space, for a single government to effectively govern even a huge chunk of a planet should be trivial. Technology can lower a whole lot of barriers in that regard.
Avatar
Vāstra II 21-Feb-20 07:47 PM
That's true
But that safir are telepathic makes me think that their nations would be smaller, so as to prevent information breakdown due to distance (essentially an unwitting game of telephone)
Avatar
Shyriath 21-Feb-20 07:52 PM
That's a possibility. Especially, I guess, if they lean on that for long-distance communication more than they do on tech - I suppose that would be kind of natural, if it's the kind of ability your species has already had for forever.

Avatar
Shyriath 08-Apr-20 08:17 PM
Dunno. That is, though, part of the reason why I have state names turned and expanded to fit the shape of the state in CorelDraw - the city names have more wiggle room to work with if they can go between the larger letters of the state names. It's a trick I learned from the National Geographic atlas.

I have no particular plans for the area of the political map that's currently blank — and even Kāstróvel's shape isn't guaranteed — so it's all yours (edited)
Avatar
Shyriath 23-Jun-20 07:25 AM
Most of it seems great to me. I did want to make a point about the larger lake on the border of Firn and Atoskherakh, though. The way it's positioned on the topography, it suggests that water flows out of it at three points - one west, toward the smaller lake; one north, through Atoskherakh; and one east-and-eventually-south. It's not impossible for a lake to have multiple major, permanent outflows, but it's not usual. And the more of them it has, the more unusual it'll be, because it means that those points of exit all have to be at pretty close to the same height and stay that way despite erosion. Otherwise, the water would eventually just drain out of the lowest one and leave the others high and dry.

Vāstra II 26-Jun-20 10:17 PM
@State-Sanctioned Surveyor I think we need to add more land to the map. Daia is currently only 16.3% land, and I don't know about you but I'd rather not make major hurricanes de rigeur. shocked_safir (edited)

@jameswilary How tall do you intend for each level of your topo map to be?
Avatar
jameswilary 26-Jun-20 11:49 PM
I am not sure, that partially depends on how tall you want things to be.
It represents the terrain more than absolute heights atm.
Avatar
Vāstra II 26-Jun-20 11:49 PM
Fair
I have layers on the master map in 5 hm increments up to 5 km, so that would make Aran somewhere above 4 km (edited)

It does occur to me: depending on how many other cities/forests/parks are going to be added, you might want to consider putting the names and areas into a legend and just leaving numbers on the map itself. Or possibly just separating the areas out into a table off to one side.

@Vāstra II New Vyktory here? New Jamestown on the NW peninsula, New Harrisville in the SW and Nou Sabadell in the NE
(yeah we picked up some catalonians along the way, space time leak from my IRL spanish studies and the obvious LMAST reference. XD) (edited)
(blame those damn wyrmish)
Even if I take this whole island chain, have New Georgetown on the smallest island and New Stamford as far away from everyone else as possible, because that place is obviously Vyktoryan Slough (edited)
Or for a more American specific reference, New Jamestown's New Jersey. XD
And for the smaller towns, there still exists my old football league posts on the HUB.MN from which @Shyriath and @Vāstra II can pick through, choose from, and scatter liberally.
Many place names there. But as for the state affiliations, fuck them, we're centrally planned socialist now. XD
And yeah, this is the logical extension of what we discussed in DMs Hal.

@Shyriath would it be possible to slide the landmasses over on your map so that the prime meridian runs through Akroma, please? also, Eňasa needs to move slightly since it is presently in the middle of a lake; I will shortly upload an updated master map that includes both of these changes, as well as a few more (yet unnamed shocked_safir) countries. Aran was moved to reflect its actual location on the political map; Kāstróvel was edited slightly; New Vyktory (with a modified color for readability) and the Wyrmish Research Outpost were included; and six new countries were added.
